Lamborghini An Enthusiasts Car? I Think Not.

As the headline states, Lamborghini is definitely not an enthusiasts car. A tool of marketing genius in the past decade? Yes. A playboy's ultimate accessory? Yes. A rap moguls car? Definitely.

But to actually call Lamborghini's something an automotive enthusiast would enjoy is utterly absurd. That would be like saying Gigli is something any movie buff would have in their collection. But wait Walter, it just looks so damn good! And with that I have to agree with you, but it stops there. If you look at Lamborghini's history it starts off in the fields of Italy when a young man known as Ferruccio Lamborghini complained about his Ferrari's clutch and Enzo told him to stick to driving tractors instead. And off he went to develop his own car in spite of Enzo (which Ford would also later do..). Since then Lamborghini has always tried to outdo Ferrari with about as success as you marrying Pamela Anderson. Sure she may be very attractive, but after a couple of weeks you’ll be back in Vegas with divorce papers. While I won't go into any of Lamborghini's failures as a company, those do exist too. The reason why Ferrari's are enthusiast’s cars while Lamborghini's are not isn't just because they have better handling, better brakes, better acceleration, but of one key element: passion. When you sit behind the wheel of a Gallardo you think to yourself, "damn, I must look good." When you sit behind the wheel of an F430 you have images of Michael Schumacher winning Formula One championships year after year, the names Ascari, Hill, Ickx, Lauda, and Fangio come to mind. Your heart begins to race, sweat begins to come out, and you all of the sudden feel as if though you are a part of something bigger. The best you can get with a Lamborghini is Balboni doing circles around Sant'Agata Bolognese.
Even today Lamborghini tries to out do Ferrari at their own game, but can't come close. The recently released Reventon which is a facelift constructed with spare parts from George Lucas' home to capture the market of the Enzo buyer, but falls short. The Superleggera, which Lamborghini came out with to try to emulate the success of the Challenege Stradale falls short. Even Evo magazine recently said the Lamborghini may be called the Superleggera, but the F430 Scuderia feels it. Next time you get the opportunity to drive one of these machines, seize it, and let me know what you think. Most likely at the end of the day you will realize that poster of a Lamborghini you had when you were a kid is left best hanging above your childhood bed.

Funny - everyone I know who isn't a car fan/enthusiast but would like to own a very quick, stlyish car wants a Gallardo Spyder.

I can't really tell but is this an article that's pro-Ferrari, anti-Lambo or just to compare both?

are you some sort of idiot?? i dunno i think it might be pro ferrari, or maybe the extremely obvious rhetoric is lost on your pea sized brain

Hey Walter... Watch Clarkson's Supercar Showdown DVD. The Gallardo vs F430 race tells it all... Of course, he also hated on the Murcie and praised the 599... So I guess it didn't really settle anything.
  • RawAutos wrote in reply on February 4, 9:40 pm:
Difference though, the Gallardo is made by Audi and the Ferrari is made by Ferrari. I would expect a giant German automaker to produce an exotic that doesn't break down.

  • Walter wrote on January 2, 5:43 pm:
@ Murphnation - Not necessarily anti-Lambo, I respect what they do, but as far as actually driving is concerned I much prefer the Ferrari. As I said in the article Lamborghini's are very stylish and push the boundrys of automotive design but as far as automotive technologies and the driving/feel of them they are far behind Ferrari.

@ AllanLambo - Very informative as usual. If you have enough time please feel free to actually construct an article defending your point of view. Would love to hear what you have to say. Also thank you for the flowers this morning, but I'm not interested, sorry.

    @Emil - Thanks, I'll check that out.

    Hey Walter,

If you can take Schumacher's cock out of your mouth long enough to read this post, let me tell you that your opinion is worth less than the shit on my shoe. Lamborghini is better looking, doesn't only come in RED, and you don't have to dress head to toe in brand clothing everytime you want to drive.

Now go put on your Volkswagen racing gloves and let that 1984 Golf rippppp!

    Fag.

If you take the time to see who Wally is, youll find he is a kid with some old POS Audi. From a credible source he got buttfucked by a Ferrarifag in full uniform while tickling Carbon Mcdildos balls. Hence he has now been admitted into the Ferrari Club of America after passing their initiation.

At least this is amuzing lol. So Allan do you have anything credible or just your gay fantasies and misinformation (never owned an Audi)?

I don't think the drivability of a production street Ferrari is any better then that of its Lamborghini equivalent. They have very different driving characteristics, but the gearing in the Lamborghinis are much better then the Ferraris i've driven. A 360/430 feels fast because its screams to redline quickly, but it not actually going fast(relative to fast cars, not a toyota camry), the short gear box gives a false sensation of speed. Sort of like a Lotus Elise, you wing through 5 gears and your doing 120 mph. 1st gear in the Ferraris i've driven is terrible, if you rev it past 5000 rpm at anything less then 70% throttle the car bucks violently until you shift to 2nd. (This holds true in the entire list of production v8 ferraris i've driven.) Another consistent theme i've noticed when comparing the two is in the different high speed handling characteristics between the two brands. Ferraris feel very unstable over 160 mph and during any high speed cornering the front end gets very light and gives you a floaty feel. Lamborghinis handle high speeds much better giving you a confidence inspiring "hugging the road" feeling the faster you go. Both cars have virtually the same brakes and weigh about the same so the braking performance is equal. Speed wise Lamborghinis are generally always faster then there ferrari counterparts. Ferrari has built a better brand, I agree the Reventon sucked and is not anywhere as cool as an Enzo. Ferraris have better resale value because of the branding and inflated market they have created for themselves. But 1 very important category where Ferrari doesn't come close to competing with Lamborghini is in the reliability department, which to me is the most important part of having an exotic / fast car. I would agree the Lamborghini is a flashier car and doesn't have the cooperate racing history of Ferrari. However saying 1 is better then the other is hard, they are both different but are still able to envoke the same passion out of the owners. Personally, I rather be looking like a playboy driving down in South Beach in my Gallardo Spyder. Not sitting at the cigar bar bragging to my smoking buddies that my car is down in the shop for the 4th time this year. Oh and Lastly Ferraris engine out "Major Services" are BS(fixed in 2005 with the 430). You have all this racing background and you cant design a belt system that can withstand 15,000 miles or 3 years of sitting. No thanks.

Heres the thing. Ferrari has a strong racing history and a passion producing cars. Where as Lambo has always produced the flash and fire type car. I think this is a great article that calls out all the Lamborghini posers out there. Heck Ford has a better track record on the track than the bull. just my 2
  • Max (anon) wrote on January 9, 3:27 pm:
I might want to worship a Ferrari, but I'd rather own a Lamborghini.

Audi is behind Lamborghini, and the car is closer to Audi built quality. Heck the Gallardo is made in Germany, on the same plant that builds the Audi R8.
Behind Ferrari is Fiat, a company with lackluster quality.

I'll close this with my favorite quote from Frank Sinatra, "If you want to be somebody, buy a Ferarri, if you ARE somebody, you own a Lamborghini."

That pretty much sums it up.
Too many people have an opinion about cars which they will never drive, let alone own. Let the people who can actually buy one argue about which is better.

Some of the most passionate things a person can do are done out of spite. So Lambos are can be for enthusiasts, maybe not race enthusiast, but a car enthusiasts who seeks the extreme: extreme speed, styling (just look at the 350 gtv and miura), attitude (yes the reventon is hideous, but it does make a statement). Not every gearhead has a history book and a stopwatch next to his checkbook. Because Lambo has got a chip on its shoulder and it isn't saddled with maintaining history, it can be more extreme, and strangely enough more innovative (would ferrari put awd in a car?). If I wore nomex daily, my point of view may be biased toward Ferrari, but I still would include Lambo as a car enthusiast's mode of transportation, albeit to the track and not on the track. Who would I park next to? Hmm probably parked next to Bentley GTR , (which have race history, but more time spent on bling than Nurburgring) and Buggati Veyrons (supercar recordbreaker not supercar race car).

With your definition of enthusiast you eliminate some of the supercars of today because of lack of race history: Pagani Zonda and Koenigsegg come to mind.
I would love have either car. But I suspect spending time at a Lamborghini's owners club meeting would be more fun than spending time with Ferraristi. Since I'm not wearing nomex, the pursuit of fun and speed is why they are poster material.

Personally I find Lamborghini's unatractive. It's as if they took a block, trimed the corners and stuck wheels on it.
  • Mike (anon) wrote on January 12, 8:35 am:
I totally agree. You hardly see any Lambo out in the racing circuits and winning. I have more respect for Ferrari because of their racing heritage and commitment.

The thoughtful responses are great. I don't understand why all the others feel it necessary to make personal attacks against the guy who took the time to write the article. Even worse are the attacks on his sexuality. Are these really relevant to the debate of his premise. If you feel strongly about his position, address his position, not the person.

As far as the debate. I have always preferred Lamborginis. It could be the adolescent Countach fantasies, or compulsion to support the underdog, but it always seems to be a much more interesting brand. As far as performance, the performance differences lie on the other side of the boundary within which most of live and drive.
  • Rob Ferretti wrote on January 12, 4:39 pm:
In all fairness Ferrari has great racing heritage, and they are fastest in F1, but that doesn't mean their street cars are winning S**T. F1 results don't reflect on production cars, same way NASCAR results don't bring my aunts Monte Carlo any closer to being a track monster.

Ferrari is great at marketing building a brand and charging way over sticker for their cars. But to say one Lamborghini owners dont have passion is completely inaccurate.

By definition "Passion" is the emotion of feeling very strongly about a subject or person, usually referring to feelings of intense desire and attraction.

This is true with almost any brand of sports car, BMW, Merceedes, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Corvette, all the way down to cars like the nissan 240sx, and VWs.

In many ways, I agree with this guy. Having owned two Diablos, I can tell you that older Lambos brought with them maintenance and reliability problems and both had a "surge" problem as you tipped in the throttle. Diablos were terrible track cars, but were dead sexy. Resale value is up and down on Lambos, but the price of a Murci is way over inflated.

But there's lot to like about Lambos. Styling, color choices, options, the sound of a modified exhaust and the newer ones are better than they've ever been.

There's not much to dislike about Ferraris, other than owners appear to be sheep...they buy the same clothes, order the same color car, and rarely drive them above the speed limit....BUT: you'll never see a Lambo track day! At least some Ferrari owners actually race them.

Ferrari's racing experience translates into their street cars in small ways, many of which are purely cosmetic. High speed stability and the fact that they're not as fast as other cars in the category, many costing tens of thousands less, are factors that drive me to another brand: Porsche.

Those looking for fast cars at a reasonable price need to shop in this order:
    Corvette with ZR51 suspension
    Corvette Z06
    Porsche 996 or 997 Turbo
    Porsche GT3
    Porsche GT2

If you need automotive jewelry, have a small willy or otherwise need to compensate for other personality deficiencies (like me), consider a Lambo or Ferrari.
